Te Kano Estate: Planting Seeds of Excellence in Central Otago
In the Māori language, Te Kano means "The Seed"—a fitting name for an estate dedicated to regenerating the land and growing a legacy from the ground up. During a recent tasting, Natalie Walsh, Te Kano’s Global Head of Sales & Marketing, guided us through seven wines that showcase the diverse terroirs of Central Otago and Marlborough.
Owned by the Lloyd family, the estate operates across four distinct vineyard sites: Northburn, Bannockburn (Jerome and Eliza vineyards), and the limestone-rich Waitaki Valley. Their commitment to organic and sustainable practices is evident in every glass.
The Tasting Flight
The session highlighted the "Life," "Kin," and "Land" series, including a guest appearance from their Marlborough label, Pounamu.
- Pounamu Sauvignon Blanc 2023 – Marlborough
Starting the flight with a classic, this wine is named after the precious New Zealand greenstone. It offers a refined take on Marlborough Sauvignon, with vibrant passionfruit and lime zest aromas underpinned by a clean, flinty minerality.
- Life Pinot Gris 2023 – Otago
A vibrant, off-dry style blending fruit from Bannockburn (weight and tropical notes) and Waitaki (minerality and acidity). Expect aromas of Nashi pear, ginger, and white florals.
- Life Blanc de Noir 2023 – Central Otago
A 100% Pinot Noir white wine from the Eliza vineyard. This BioGro-certified organic wine is pale and luminous, featuring stone fruit and citrus notes with a distinct mineral finish.
- Life Chardonnay 2022 – Central Otago
A complex blend reflecting Waitaki limestone and Northburn schist. Barrel-fermented with nine months on lees, it delivers layers of yellow peach and brioche, balanced by a fresh citrus peel backbone.
- Kin Pinot Noir 2021 – Central Otago
An approachable, "pretty" expression of Pinot Noir. It opens with ripe cherry and wild thyme on the nose, followed by a supple palate of red berries and fine tannins.
- Landwalker Pinot Noir 2023 – Central Otago
A more structured red, incorporating fruit from across Te Kano's estates. Aged for 10 months in French oak, it shows darker fruit profiles—raspberry and plum—complemented by savoury notes.
- Land Cabernet Franc 2022 – Central Otago
A rare and extremely small-batch production from the Northburn site. This wine highlights the unique Northburn terroir with intense aromas of blackcurrant and liquorice, offering a "bittersweet" black fruit profile.
A Professional Masterclass
The tasting was elevated significantly by Natalie Walsh. Her presentation was the definition of polished and professional; she navigated the technical nuances of soil types and vinification with an ease that made the information accessible yet deeply informative. Her passion for the Te Kano legacy was infectious, leaving us with a profound understanding of why these wines stand out in a competitive region.
